5. Where to now? No, really, where do we go from here?

Had a good sleep afterall, thinking I’d be awake listening to thieves steal our stuff, but after Carlton won their game, I was off like the lights. 

Woke up at 6, bloody robot alarm, to sound of spatter of rain. It’s 16C currently. 

We have no set destination today, but apparently we’ll be free-camping tonight. I have the option to book another night here, but I’m not feeling touristy, just wanna get out of Staleg 13. Left prison camp at 7.17, to get fuel @$2.03 p/L, wishing we had a long range tank. 

Impressed with the main road thru town, very clean and gardens well kept. The train line is hidden by a fence with cut-outs, resembling indigenous art.

Sporadic mobile service after AS, so here’s a quick update. 

We arrived at the Tropic Of Capricorn roadside stop at 8am, for done photos, it has been raining since leaving AS, so some roadside areas were rather muddy. I stayed away from the long drop this time 😷

I’ve been wanting a red earth photo since we were near Coober Pedy, so today Husband obliged. I used my Smart Doll’s hair as a resemblance to the dirt.

The next roadhouse (no real ‘towns’) was Barrow Creek. We took a look at the shop front and thought hell no, I hear banjos, and found the telegraph house beside it 🤦🏻‍♀️

It would have been nice to have a look, but bring Saturday, it looked closed. 

 

We were low on fuel and saw signs to 

Wycliffe Well, staying fuel, ammenities and The UFO Capital of Australia. Whhooohoo somewhere interesting! I’m sick of staring out the window. 

How disappointed do you think I was, when we got there?

Bloody placed was deserted. Once upon a time, it was a motel, caravan park, tourist icon and fuel station. Now there’s only Elvis, aliens and a big friggin rubbish heap. Thankfully, Hysbabd had gone prepared, having fuel in Jerry cans, so we made it to Devil’s Marbles and on to Tennant Creek, without drama. 

The Devil’s Marbles are amazing, but I’d suggest hiking boots, not flip flops 🤦🏻‍♀️ even though we didn’t see any snakes, we did see a goanna. A good break before travelling on to TC., where there’s a large population of indigenous people. 

We’re staying in the G’Day Holiday Park tonight then hightailing it. After hearing tails of unrest, I don’t feel very safe. 

  

That’s it for today, not sure how far we’ll go tomorrow, but we’re trying to slow down a bit, we don’t have to be in Darwin until Thursday!
